Is your scooter not starting electrically or mechanically and want to find out where the problem lies? Diagnose yourself following a roadmap. You can follow this step-by-step plan to find out why it won't start. If it still doesn't work after that, please feel free to contact us.

Oil Levels.

In case your scooter stops starting or has suddenly failed check first if you have oil in your scooter. Here is an article on how to pipe your oil in the case of a 4 stroke.

Does your scooter not start electrically but does kickstart ?

If your scooter does not do the electric start then there is often something else going on other than a problem with the fuel supply, compression or spark. The electric start part mainly involves 3 things.
These are the

  • Battery
  • Starter motor
  • Bendix

Doesn't your scooter start both electrically and with the kickstart ?

Check the vacuum line and fuel line for cracks or leaks

Spark the scooter.

In doing this, you take off the spark plug cap and the spark plug you take out. Then you put the spark plug in the cap and hold it against the cylinder head and start the scooter. Note. do not hold the spark plug itself but the spark plug cap otherwise you may get a shock. Hold the end of the spark plug against the

Does the scooter get fuel.

  1. Turn off the ignition
  2. Disconnect the fuel line
  3. Kickstart
  4. Is something coming out or not ?
    1. Yes, a little bit and then it stops again
    2. Yes, only it keeps on running
    3. No, nothing at all

So in this case you know whether you are getting enough, too much or too little gasoline. If you have point 4.1 then you are fine in terms of gasoline.

    Does my scooter have Compression.

You can test this very easily by pressing your kickstarter. If your kickstarter is very heavy, you have good compression. If your kickstarter is very light, it means that you have no compression and that in the case of a 4-stroke scooter for example your valves or piston need replacing and in the case of a 2-stroke scooter you can look at for example the diaphragm.

Scooter does not start but sparks

If your scooter sparks but does not start, your ignition is good, but there is something wrong with your compression or fuel supply. You can find out the fuel supply and compression by reading the heading above. It explains what to do if your scooter does not start but does spark.

Scooter will not start after long idle time.

Is your scooter not starting after standing still for a long time? Then it could just be that your scooter is not getting gasoline. Probably your carburetor is clogged with sediment that is in gasoline. If you don't use your scooter for a long time, this sediment will sink to the bottom of your float and may cause a blockage in your carburetor.

Scooter will not start after rain

Scooter no longer starts after rain? Did you leave your scooter outside during a rainstorm and it won't start.
    Please check the following:

    • Spark plug
    • CDI
    • Ignition coil
    • Voltage regulator
    • The ignition

These are cables/parts that are susceptible to moisture/water. This means that a short circuit can occur when opening these parts in or near water. If your scooter still does not start after that, we advise you to seek help from a mechanic.

Scooter will not start after winter

Is your scooter not starting after the winter? This can have many causes. Did it snow on your scooter? Both, then snow has the same effect as water and the snow may have damaged the wiring, use the same technique as for water damage. If not, it is often due to the cold. The battery then drains faster and the fluids in the scooter are then often frozen/ solidified. It then takes a while before everything has warmed up again. Will it still not start? Then you can quickly make an appointment with us to find out what the problem might be.

Scooter stops while riding and does not start again.

Should your scooter stop while riding and not start again. Then chances are that your scooter has had a hot run. This can be due to a shortage of oil. So first check if you have enough oil in your block before starting again. If you don't, you may end up with a stalled engine and you won't be able to do anything with it anymore. If there is no oil in the engine block, you can add oil and start again. If your oil is full then there is something else wrong and it is best to make an appointment with us.

Starter motor turns but engine does not start.

Should your starter motor turn but your engine does not start then you should see if your scooter does start with kickstart. If it does start with kickstart then you know that there is something wrong between the starter motor and the crankshaft. This could be your bendix not engaging and thus your crankshaft not cranking. Should your scooter also not start with the kickstart, read the heading "won't start your scooter both electrically and with the kickstart".

Are you still none the wiser based on this step-by-step plan and your scooter still won't start. Feel free to contact us and we will be happy to help you.
