Have you just purchased or are you planning to purchase a scooter? In the Netherlands, as you may already know, it is mandatory to insure your scooter. With scooter insurance you want to get the perfect insurance deal that suits you. In this article we are going to teach you how scooter insurance works and which one might suit you.

Scooter Insurance

After passing your exams and owning a scooter, it is mandatory to have at least third-party scooter insurance. A third-party insurance means that you are fully covered for damage caused by other vehicles. It is therefore very important to have at least this insurance, in addition, it is also punishable to use an uninsured scooter on public roads.

How is the premium for my scooter insurance determined?

To determine the price of your scooter premium, the insurance company takes a number of components into account. Which ones are you will read below.

Driving License

To insure a scooter, you don't need a driver's license. However, it does become much more difficult to insure a scooter. If you want to insure a scooter without a driver's license, you will have to provide a regular driver for the scooter. If you can't, the insurance premium will be very high. It can also happen that an insurance company refuses you.

Year built

If your scooter has just rolled out of the factory and it is destroyed, the cost of repair is very likely to be many times higher than if your scooter is older and has been around longer. Because the insurance company is more likely to pay a higher amount, your premium will also be higher with a newer scooter.

Residence scooter insurance

Where you live affects the premium you will pay for your scooter insurance. If you live in the countryside, there is less chance of vandalism and theft than if you live in a busy city. So the cost of scooter insurance will be slightly higher if you live in the city than if you live in the countryside. Based on your zip code, the insurer will determine where you live and what the risk is for damage to your scooter.

What are claim-free years

You may have heard of the term "claim-free years." A number of insurers reward you for your good driving record. You then build up claim-free years and receive a discount for each year of no-claims coverage. This only applies if you already have scooter insurance for several years. Please note that if even 1 year of self-inflicted damage is done to your scooter, the series is over and you will have to start building claim-free years again. If you are not responsible for the damage, you will still be entitled to claim-free discount in normal cases.

At what age can I buy my scooter insurance

With most insurers it is possible to get scooter insurance from your sixteenth birthday. Please note: until your eighteenth birthday, your parents or guardians are required to co-sign.
Are you still living with your parents? You can co-insure your scooter on your parents' policy as long as you still live with your parents. This may sound very attractive to you because you will likely receive a much lower premium for your scooter insurance. However, you will then be registered as a regular user. Note: Failure to disclose this to the insurance company is punishable and is considered fraud.

Reasons to insure your scooter

Besides the fact that WA scooter insurance is mandatory, there are still reasons to purchase scooter insurance. A brand new scooter has a high theft rate in addition, your scooter can always be damaged by weather or someone else. You can also add legal assistance to your scooter insurance.

Type of scooter

Do you have a brand new scooter? You will probably have to pay a more expensive premium for your scooter insurance anyway. This is because you are at greater risk of damaging your scooter and your scooter is also more attractive to thieves. Your scooter type can also make a difference, a moped bike is also normally a bit cheaper in terms of premium, as a moped bike goes a bit slower and is therefore less likely to have serious accidents. In addition, the co2 emissions are less than a moped.

Type of scooter insurance

The coverage of a scooter insurance may vary among insurers. There are three ways to insure your scooter, namely; the third-party insurance (mandatory) with this insurance you are covered for damage you cause to others. You also have the hull insurance and the all risk. With the hull insurance you are covered for damage due to storm, broken windows and fire, you are also covered for theft. With an all-risk insurance you are covered for all kinds of damage caused to your scooter or to someone else.

What does scooter insurance cost?

Third-party insurance

What does insurance cost scooter?Scooter insurance has different types of coverage as already indicated earlier in this article. You might already know that the basic (third party) insurance is the cheapest, this insurance deal often costs between €5 and €10 per month depending on the scooter and year of construction. In addition, they will also look at your past driving record. Don't have a history? Then the premium will already be high.

Hull insurance

How much does Casco scooter insurance cost? Hull insurance, also called the middle and most popular insurance. Strangely, not every insurance company offers this deal. This insurance often costs between €10 and €30 per month depending on whether it's a moped or moped. Then your past record is used as an indicator, so they can expect what kind of driving habits you have.

All risk insurance

How expensive is all risk scooter insurance? The most expensive and the all cover, also known as all risk insurance, ensures that all damages are covered. As the word itself suggests, this insurance covers all possible risks through which a scooter could be damaged. This scooter insurance often costs between €35 and €90 per month for a moped. For a moped, however, the rate is considerably lower, between €15 and €35 per month.
